Tips for Responsible Play
Following these guidelines can help you keep gambling fun and safe:
- Set a budget before you play. Decide how much you can afford to lose before you start. Never gamble with money you need for rent, bills, or essentials.
- Set a time limit. It's easy to lose track of time when gambling. Set an alarm or use the casino's session timer to remind you to take breaks.
- Never chase losses. If you've hit your budget limit, walk away. Trying to win back what you've lost almost always leads to bigger losses.
- Don't gamble when emotional. Avoid gambling when you're stressed, angry, depressed, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These states impair judgment.
- Treat it as entertainment. Think of the money you spend gambling the same way you'd think about a movie ticket or dinner out — it's the cost of entertainment, not an investment.
- Take regular breaks. Step away from the screen periodically. Continuous play can lead to poor decision-making.
- Keep gambling separate from other activities. Don't let gambling interfere with your work, relationships, or daily responsibilities.
- Use deposit limits. Most online casinos offer tools to set daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits. Use them.
Warning Signs of Problem Gambling
Problem gambling can develop gradually. If you recognize any of these behaviors in yourself or someone you know, it may be time to seek help:
Signs to Watch For
- Spending more money or time gambling than you intended
- Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
- Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble
- Feeling restless or irritable when trying to stop gambling
- Gambling to escape problems or relieve feelings of anxiety or depression
- Chasing losses — increasing bets to try to recover money you've lost
- Neglecting work, school, or family obligations because of gambling
- Failed attempts to cut back or stop gambling
- Risking important relationships or opportunities because of gambling
If any of these apply to you, please reach out to the helpline above or one of the organizations listed below. Help is available, free, and confidential.
Self-Exclusion
Self-exclusion is a voluntary program that allows you to ban yourself from gambling platforms for a set period of time. Most reputable online casinos offer self-exclusion tools directly in your account settings.
When you self-exclude:
- Your account will be closed or frozen for the exclusion period (typically 6 months to 5 years, or permanently).
- You will not be able to access your account, deposit funds, or place bets during the exclusion period.
- Marketing communications from the casino will be stopped.
To self-exclude, contact the casino's customer support or look for the responsible gambling / self-exclusion option in your account settings. You can also contact the National Council on Problem Gambling for guidance on multi-site self-exclusion programs.
